The Importance of Good Tyres in the Winter

Winter driving can be tricky. The roads can be slicker than other times of the year. It is important to have good tyres in the wintertime in order to drive safely.

Check the Treads

Having worn threads means that there is very little of the tyres that have contact with the road. The treads are what cause the tyres to hold the road creating a safer driving experience. It is important to make sure the treads on the tyres are within the legal limit when you are driving, all the time but especially during the winter months.

The legal tyre tread is 1.6mm but most replacement technicians recommend having the tyres replaced at 3mm. The minimum tread must be around the entire tire. If you have uneven tread wear on the tyre, that means there is an issue with the alignment of the car, and that is another issue that needs to be addressed because it is a safety issue.

If the safety risks of having low treads don’t convince you to have your tyres replaced, there is a fine of £2,500 and three penalty point. If you are found to have four tyres that are worn down below the legal limit, you can also lose your license and a possible £10,000 fine.

Dry rot, Bulges, and Wires

Any damage to a tyre can cause a blowout, which can lead to a serious accident. Check the tyres regularly. If you notice a bulge in the tire wall, you need to have the tyres replaced. This can cause the tire wall to blow out. Also look for the steel wires that are in the tyres. You should never be able to see these wires showing through the rubber. If you see the wires, it is important to have the tyres replaced immediately. Also look for dry rot. This is another issue that can cause the tyres to burst and cause an accident. Check the Tyre Pressure

While it is vital that the treads of the tyres are in good shape, making sure the tire pressure is accurate is another important aspect of having safe tyres. When the tyre pressure is off, it affects the tyres ability to perform correctly.

Always make sure the tire pressure is set correctly for your tyres and your vehicle. The tire pressure is written on the side wall of the tire. If you can not locate the tyre pressure there, there is usually a sticker on the inside bottom of the driver’s side door. This will give the correct PSI for the tyres. Another spot to check is in the owner’s manual.

Thank you for this! I know good tires are essential but wasn’t entirely sure what to look for!
