Sharing is caring!

If you’re a fan of winter, then you know that there’s nothing better than making your home feel cosy, being able to get snug and warm in your home no matter how horrible it gets outside. Of course, there are many people who feel as though they’re never going to be able to make the most of the festive season because it feels as though they’re constantly fighting an uphill battle with the cold.

Let’s face it; you’re never going to be able to have a particularly merry holiday season if you and your family spend the entire time shivering with icicles dangling from your nostrils! Luckily, you’re not going to have to. There are plenty of things that you can do in order to make the winter feel less unpleasant, no matter what kind of home you live in. Just because you’re not in the cosy cottage of many people’s winter dreams, doesn’t mean that there aren’t plenty of things that you can do in order to feel cosy, allowing you to get as warm and comfortable as possible this Christmas.

Fill it up with stuff!

A home that feels lived in is always going to be far warmer than one that feels more like a showroom. If your home is completely empty, then it’s almost certainly going to end up feeling cold and care. Simple things like filling it with furniture, decorations, rugs, and, most importantly, people, can make a huge difference. The reality is that any room that you want to feel warmer in should be one that you’re using as frequently as possible.

Sure, some rooms are going to get used more than others, but if you leave a room unused for too long, then you’re going to end up feeling like you’ve stepped into a freezer. It’s no surprise that the cosiest rooms like the living room and bedroom, are often the ones that have the most stuff in them.

Get your heating working properly

Sure, you might be trying to save some money on your heating by cutting back on the amount of energy that you’re using, but the truth is that you are almost certainly going to need it at some point during the winter. Of course, if you try turning it on and then you suddenly realise that it’s not working, that’s going to be a serious issue. The best thing you can do is to make sure to test your heating before you get to the point where you really need it.

If the issue is with your boiler, then you need to get that repaired ASAP and if the issue is with the radiators then getting replacements from somewhere like Only Radiators should be at the very top of your list of priorities. Even if you’re only using it from time to time, there’s no way that you’re going to be able to last all winter long without using your heating. Not only that but if you don’t then the water in your pipes could freeze and burst, which is the kind of household disaster that you really don’t need around Christmas time!

Invest in double glazing

Of course, if you don’t have double glazing in your home then it really isn’t going to make a difference how often you have your heating on. Single glazed windows are one of the main reasons why so many homes get so cold during the winter. So much heat escapes from them that many people end up having to have their heating on full blast just to avoid turning into a popsicle.

Double glazing is such a small and simple change to your home and one that isn’t often all that expensive either, but it can make a huge difference to the overall comfort levels of your home. That way, not only are you going to feel cosier at home, but you’re also going to end up saving yourself a lot of money over time in heating bills.

Use space differently

Most of the time, the issue that a lot of people have is that they wish that they had more space in their homes. Well, the truth is that more space can be something of a double-edged sword. Sure, it can be incredibly convenient to have more space or larger rooms, but that also means that heating that space can be a lot harder. It’s a good idea to think carefully about whether or not you’re actually using the space that you have in an effective enough way to maximise comfort and warms.

Minimising the amount of empty space in some rooms can actually be a blessing, despite what conventional wisdom might tell you. If your living room has massively wide spaces between everything, then you’re never going to get the kind of cosy and warm feeling that you would if it was less spread out.

Cushions and blankets fix everything!

This might not be the most scientific statement in the world, but it is a 100% proven fact that cushions and blankets make everything better. Not only are they going to make your living room and bedroom far more comfortable and luxurious to spend time in, but they can also help you get as warm and cosy as possible.

In the winter, there really is nothing quite as wonderful as getting the entire family under a blanket with cups of hot chocolate so that you can all watch something festive on the TV. No matter how horrible and cold the weather outside might be, it can feel like you and your family are in your own little warm, cosy corner of the world where it can’t get to you.

These kinds of things might seem incredibly simple, but the truth is that it’s often the simplest solutions that are the most effective. Sure, there are plenty of so-called “life hacks” out there giving you strange and unexpected advice on how to stay warm, but the reality is that there are few things more effective than the tried and tested methods that people have been using to stay warm for generations!
