Summer might be short in the UK, but it can often get much warmer than we’re used to. When a heatwave arrives, it might not seem like a big deal to people in warmer climates, but we can find it unbearable. With many of us thinking about we don’t have air conditioning intstalled. It’s nice to enjoy the sunshine while it’s available, but it can also be difficult when you have to suffer through the high temperatures in your home.

No Air Conditioning? How To Set Your Home Up for Summer
Our homes are generally designed to keep heat in, so we can all find that we’re sweating ourselves to sleep for a few weeks every year. However, most people don’t think installing air conditioning is worth it. There are other ways to ensure your home stays cool in the heat.
Control the Light
Preventing sunlight from getting into your home can help you to avoid it heating up like a greenhouse. It may seem like blocking the windows might make things warmer, but it’s probably going to help your home stay cool. Picking the right window dressings will help you be prepared for summer and should help you out in winter too. If you install internal shutters, you’ll have control over how much light comes into your home. You can also use curtains or blinds. Thermal curtains or blinds can be especially good, helping you keep cool in summer and warm in winter.
Choose Hard Floors
Many British homes have carpets because they’re warmer and better for insulation. But not everyone likes carpets, and they can definitely be a pain in the summer. If you would give anything for the feel of cool tile or hardwood under your feet, say no to carpets and choose hard floors instead. There’s no need to worry about them being too cold in the winter because you can do a few things about that. The quick and simple solution is to put down rugs that you can remove in summer. Or for a more permanent solution, consider underfloor heating.
Open Windows at Night
Opening up your windows during the evenings will help to let in the cooler night air and transfer the warmer air outside. If you want to be able to do that in the summer, there are a couple of things you might consider. Firstly, you need windows that open properly so consider what type of window could allow you to open them wide while keeping them safe. Another thing to consider is security. If you’re concerned about leaving your windows open, consider using measures such as sensors and alarms to let you know of any activity.
Use the Right Bedding
The bedding you choose to sleep in can make a big difference during a hot night. We’ve all spread out in a starfish pose trying to keep cool, too hot with covers but feeling weird without them. If you want to be prepared for summer, make sure you have cotton bedding, which is breathable and lightweight.
You don’t need air conditioning to keep cool in summer, especially if you’re only going to use it for two weeks every year. You can use other methods to set up your home for the season.
