Need to slow down: Things that you can try to help you do it
Get an early night and wake up earlier
One of the first things you could try would be to get an early night. Many people who are struggling with life being too quick for them to need some time to recuperate, and an early night can help you to get some much-needed rest and sleep.
Alongside that, getting up earlier might be a great way to help you overcome overwhelming feelings. Just fifteen minutes earlier could give you time to enjoy a cup of coffee, write a list for the day, or even stretch and do a small workout. Try it and see the difference it could make to how you feel.
Take some time out just for yourself
Another tip that could prove worthwhile would be to take some time out for yourself. It may seem like you are selfish, but the thing to remember is that you can not pour from an empty cup.
It might be as simple as taking time to read your book in the evening or having a nice warm bath. Do something simple just for you. It can help you feel more at ease with yourself and help you feel happier. This will be different for everyone, so take some time to work out what will be beneficial for you.
Go for a walk
A walk can be one of the best things that you can do to help you slow down. It is a gentle exercise, which can be an easy way to get your heart rate elevated, but it can also give you the chance to enjoy the fresh air and some quiet time.
On your walk, you could listen to an audible book or a podcast. Enjoy the time that you have to feel good about yourself. Anyone can feel anxious and overwhelmed, and a walk can be an ideal way to lift your spirits.
Turn off your phone
You may not want to hear this, but turning your phone off can be the ultimate way to slow down. We can all be a slave to our phones from time to time, getting email notifications every five minutes can be gruelling.
So switch it off, even if it is just for half an hour or a little while before you go to bed. It could help you to relax your mind and clear your head.
Learn to say no and set some priorities
Another thing you might not want to hear but can help is to learn how to say no. Many of us can feel obligated to say yes to somethings, even when we don’t want to do it, or feel like we can’t commit. However, learning to say no will help you have more time to do things you want and need to do. At the same time, learning to prioritise what you can do and what you can’t will allow you to slow down more.
Ground yourself with your senses
Finally, it is time to think about grounding yourself, and using your senses can be a great way to do it. Take a little time to think about your surroundings and actively slow down.
You should start by looking for five things you can see and then seek out four things you can feel. The next step would be three things you can hear, two things you can smell, and then one thing you can taste. This act helps you to acclimatise to your environment.
Final Thoughts
Life in the fast lane will always be the norm for so many of us, but if you can find ways to slow down, it can be beneficial for you in all aspects of your life. Try it and see the difference it could make to your life.
