Knitting; a craft that has been around for centuries – this mysterious art of using sticks to tie knots – who thought of that?! It turns out no one even knows yet, still it’s a hobby that makers of all ages and generations enjoy. A hobby that is so versatile with so many positives that go beyond what you’d think. Everyone’s motivations to knit are different and here are just a few.

Reasons to try your hand at knitting

Beautiful garments
The obvious one – being able to create your own clothing really is an amazing skill to have. You will never be stuck for inspiration with thousands of free knitting patterns you can find online as well as the tutorials and stitches you learn to create fabulously unique items of clothing. And it doesn’t stop at clothes – knitting homeware accessories like cushion covers, even bags and little trinkets to gift to friends and family.
Slow fashion
The joy of making your own clothes has benefits beyond having a fabulous wardrobe but with the time and effort it takes for you to craft an item, you’re removing so many extra steps that high street fashion brands take to have such a fast turnover of new items. Knitting timeless pieces of clothing is the perfect way to start your journey towards a slow fashion lifestyle.
Mindfulness
This is one of the most popular reasons for one to pick up the knitting needles. Once you’ve picked up some basic knitting stitches, you quickly work rhythmically. It becomes a mindless task to focus on while still keeping your attention on knitting and giving your mind a rest from the life stressors around you. It’s a great form of self-care at home!
Knitting for charity
Knitting really is a great way to support charities in ways you may not even expect! You can knit blankets for animal rescue shelters, hats for premature babies that you can donate to hospitals. Support breast cancer charities by buying and making their patterns, or knitting hats for the homeless. There are endless ways you can support a charity through knitting.

The community!
The knitting community is a fun place to be a part of! Sharing your makes with fellow knitters, supporting indie designers through buying their patterns or learning from makers’ tutorials. The LoveCrafts community does all of this both over on Instagram but also with their own community hub for you to share your recent makes and browse what others are making. It’s not just for knitting but crochet, stitching and more!
