Sharing is caring!

When we think of our dining room we think about a room that is used for the family’s togetherness. Families build many great memories in the dining room but what is in the background of those memories? Do you remember a clinically white room with few or no decorations or was it a room bathed in a golden light emitting from the crystal chandelier above? You are the one to determine the dinner memories your kids will build while growing up and with that in mind, here are some ideas.

Lighting

This has to be one of the most important elements of the dining room. It doesn’t have to be crystal chandeliers as mentioned above but a soft glow is essential. Even a plain old drum light shade can be revamped to look amazing with some ribbon, lace, crochet work or even a can of spray-on paint.

The table and chairs

Apart from the chairs having to be comfortable, they need to look good in their setting. If you are bored with an old dining room set, make use of slipcovers and a tablecloth made from complementary fabrics to give it a new lease on life.

The décor

When you have no idea what to display in your dining room you may want to take another look at Grandma Betty’s China. You remember, the set you neatly tucked away in a box in the attic. That set of fake China may be utterly worthless but it will look great as a focal point while enjoying dinner with friends.

Use colour

Dining rooms are often a drab, colourless area but they needn’t be. A simple and foolproof way of implementing colour is by using fabric with contrasting colours to make curtains or to upholster the chairs. Whichever you choose to do with the fabric will set the tone for the rest of the area. You can now take different colours from that fabric and have it splashed throughout the room. Even orange and blue can look good together if you use this method.

We can now relax and enjoy a space fit for royalty in our own homes. Remember that these décor tips can work on a budget too and in the end, it is all about the people you are making the memories with. It is just cool to supply a great backdrop for those memories.

Wow! I love these ideas. Sadly, I’m always in rented places, with furniture, so don’t have much choice over the decor, but when I finally get my hands on my own place, I’ll be all over the decorating! Sarah x

Our dining area is part of the lounge but hopefully when we have an extension or next move house we will have a proper dining room.
